A method for extracting a homogeneous catalyst comprising (A) extracting a feedstock comprising (i) a hydrogenation effluent glycolic acid, comprising (a) from 10 to 99 weight percent ethylene, from 0.5 to 50 weight percent water and from 0, 5 to 40 weight percent of one or more reaction by-products selected from glycolic acid, glycolic acid oligomers, oligomers of ethylene glycol, esters of glycolic acid, 1,2-propanediol, 1,2-butanediol, and polyols, wherein in each case based to scoop hydrochloric mass of said hydrogenation effluent glycolic acid; and (b) a catalyst composition containing ruthenium and a tridentate ligand comprising at least one phosphine selected from 1,1,1-tris (diarilfosfinometil) alkanes and 1,1,1-tris (dialkilfosfinometil) alkanes; and (ii) additional water, wherein said feedstock comprises from 5 to 50 weight percent water, based on the total weight of said effluent hydrogenation of glycolic acid and said additional water, using a first extractant comprising (i) a hydrophobic solvent selected from alkanols containing from 4 to 20 carbon atoms, ketones containing from 5 to 20 carbon atoms, esters containing from 5 to 20 carbon atoms, ethers containing 5 to 20 carbon atoms, carboxylic acids containing x 5 to 20 carbon atoms and mixtures thereof; and (ii) optionally a hydrophilic solvent, to obtain a first raffinate phase containing a major amount of ethylene glycol and said minor amount of said catalyst composition contained in the pack
