The method involves displaying first temporal information provided by a time base (5) corresponding to active mode. A first criterion with second temporal information provided at base of time is tested. A second criterion with movement information provided by a port detecting unit (10) of an electronic instrument is tested. A third criterion representative of physical or temporal size of the instrument is tested such that the transition is activated from the active mode to standby mode when the first, second and third criteria are satisfied. An independent claim is also included for an electronic instrument.
