A fuel cell system (10) comprising: a fuel cell stack (12) having a cathode inlet line (16) and a cathode outlet line (22); a compressor (14) for supplying cathode inlet air to the cathode inlet line (16); a first charge air cooler (18) for reducing the temperature of the cathode inlet air from the compressor (14); and a water vapor transfer unit (20) for humidifying the cathode inlet air passing through the cathode inlet line (16), the water vapor transfer unit (20) receiving a cathode off-gas from the cathode off-gas line (22) to provide the humidity for the cathode inlet air; characterized in that a heat exchanger (40) is provided which reduces the temperature of a stack cooling fluid flow cooled by a radiator (36) which is supplied to the first charge air cooler (18) to cool the cathode inlet air, the heat exchanger (40) being ambient air takes up for cooling the cooling fluid.
