Surfaces of the magnesium alloy based on workpieces may be deformed mechanically processed and, in order to increase the resistance to corrosion, in particular with respect to the corrosion, which in the presence of water or water and salt or other corrosive media occurs. Surfaces of the workpiece, which are to be protected in this way, pass into a press - and - and frictional contact with a suitable polishing tool or a different machining tool, which crosses the surface in order to compress it and to deform, and in order to further refine the metallurgical grain structure. For example, the grain size in a surface layer is reduced, which is up to a depth of up to a few millimeters can extend. The grain orientation is likewise changed within this depth. The tool is not used, in order to intentionally material from the surface of the workpiece to remove. The initial dimensions of the workpiece, the change of the surfaces by the mechanical processing process, be taken into account.
