Roughening of metal surfaces (3), comprises carrying out material-removing treatment of the surface, and generating material-removing treatment structures having a substantially orthogonal development for estimated loading direction and having undercuts with respect to the surface. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a component prepared with surface for adhesion improvement of thermally sprayed or poured-layers, which is formed at least in the region of the surface of a metallic material, comprising the structures substantially orthogonal to the estimated loading direction, which have undercuts with respect to the surface; (2) a broaching needle comprising a number of crosscutting in the axial direction, each having many teeth, where the teeth represent a positive image of the structures to be produced having undercuts at least in the machine direction past the cutting edge; and (3) a device for wire electrical discharge machining of a component to be coated with at least one wire, which is controllably movable relative to a surface to be machined, where a number of parallel wires are provided for simultaneous machining of the surface.
