Smoothing a damaged outer surface (20), which is an outer layer of a thermoplastic polymer (21) of a component having optical properties and the thermoplastic polymer has a flow temperature and a glass transition temperature, comprises heating the outer surface such that the temperature of the outer surface is less than the flow temperature and greater than the glass transition temperature of the thermoplastic polymer.
