The rotary encoder (10) has a housing-fixed ring-shaped holding-down device that is provided to fix the roller bearings in axial direction (30) relative to hollow shaft. The insulating rings are in contact with rolling element of roller bearing which is completely covered by insulating sleeve. The insulating sleeve is arranged in axial direction such that air gap is formed between insulating sleeve and insulation ring and between insulating sleeve and another insulation ring to compensate the axial thermal expansion of insulating sleeve.
