The method involves detecting an image of a target object (1) e.g. arm, hand or finger, by a camera e.g. time-of-flight-camera, and segmenting the target object by an evaluation unit based on form and size of the target object. A major axis angle (alpha) is determined from the position of object surfaces of the target object in a free space. Position change of the major axis angle is determined, and changing speed of the major axis angle is calculated. A determination is made to find whether the value of the changing speed exceeds threshold levels within a predetermined time interval. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for detecting body gesture.
