Hardening lead and barium free crystal glass, comprises (a) adjusting the temperature of the crystal glass to 300[deg] C to below the glass transition temperature of the crystal glass, (b) applying a mixture comprising aluminum and a solution of potassium phosphate and sodium phosphate in water to the glass surface, and forming a solid layer on the glass surface, (c) adjusting the temperature of the crystal glass to at least 300[deg] C to below the glass transition temperature of the crystal glass, (d) cooling the crystal glass at a temperature of = 30[deg] C and (e) removing the solid layer. An independent claim is also included for the lead and barium free crystal glass, which is obtained by the above mentioned method.
