The method involves supplying an expander (X1) and the capacitor (E5) respectively with the compressed and cooled portions of the refrigerant from the refrigerant circuit. The expander is powered by a primary portion of the refrigerant. The expander is cooled to an intermediate temperature (TI) from a starting temperature (TA). The capacitor is fed with a secondary portion of the refrigerant of the outlet temperature to the intermediate temperature and then cooled to a lower temperature (TE). An independent claim is included for device for separating methane from methane-containing synthesis gas.
