The crankcase comprises a cylinder surface (1) such as a cylinder bore (2) or a cylinder liner on which a mechanically roughened surface coating is applied using a thermal spraying process. The coating is further applied to a side of a cylinder head interface (9), which faces a crank chamber (12). The surface coating is applied parallel to a mechanically roughened structure using an arc wire spraying process. An independent claim is included for a method for thermally coating the cylinder bearing surfaces of a crankcase.
