The device has a valve e.g. inlet valve (11) and exhaust valve (12), mounted in a cylinder head housing (10). Valve springs (13, 14) exert a return force on the valve. Damping elements (15, 16) i.e. non-abrasive wire meshes, attenuate an oscillation of the valve springs. The damping elements are arranged between the valve springs and the cylinder head housing. The damping elements are arranged at a lower end of the valve springs, where the lower end faces valve disks (17, 18). A cam element (25) of an inlet camshaft is operated through an operating element (26) i.e. bucket tappet.
