The method involves detecting a relative position of a body. An incremental reference value is assigned to the detected relative position. Another relative position of the body is incrementally detected. The latter detected incremental relative position is compared with the assigned incremental reference value. A detected segment type of the latter incremental relative position is compared with the segment type of the assigned incremental reference value. The former relative position is measured in absolute terms. An independent claim is included for a device for use in a vehicle for verifying a relative position by another relative position.
