The method involves converting produced braking torque into electrical power by using a prime mover in generator mode of the prime mover. The electrical energy is partly stored in an energy store i.e. heavy-duty battery. The prime mover with a four-quadrant control is controlled in a state in which maximum producible electrical power from current braking torque is larger than the electrical power receptible in the energy store, so that electrical efficiency in generator mode is smaller than maximum possible electrical efficiency.
