The component (5) has sensor units (6, 7) for monitoring monitored zones at an outer side of a motor vehicle (1). A user event is set up for a comfort function. A lighting device (28) is provided with a lighting unit (9) i.e. LEDs, so that a partial area of the sensor units and/or monitoring zones is illuminated. The lighting unit is located on a lath or a flexible band. The sensor units and the lighting device are arranged on a common carrier. A long distance sensor (8) outputs a signal for initiating a switching process for the lighting unit. An independent claim is also included for a motor car.
