The method involves acquiring an object (O) by switching a light receiver to an acquisition mode. The object is detected, when signal detected by light receiver receiving light emitted by light transmitters (A-F) is reflected by object. Distance between a vehicle and object is determined by switching light receiver to a distance-measuring mode. The distance between vehicle and object is determined based on recorded information regarding reflection of light emitted by light transmitter by the object. An independent claim is included for a sensor system for acquiring object.
