Joining a composite component (2) with a second component (4), comprises (i) overlapping a first and a second outer cover plate of the composite component over the second component and an additional joining part (6), respectively, (ii) placing the composite component, the joining part and the second component between the two electrodes (8) of a resistance welding unit, (iii) joining the second component and the additional joining part with the outer cover plates, and (iv) closing at least one current path (14) between the two electrodes by the second component and the additional joining part. Joining a composite component (2) with a second component (4) made of metal using an additional joining part (6), comprises (i) overlapping a first outer cover plate of the composite component at least partially over the second component, (ii) overlapping a second outer cover plate of the composite component at least partially over the additional joining part, (iii) placing the composite component, the additional joining part and the second component, which are overlapping with each other, between the two electrodes (8) of a resistance welding unit, (iv) joining the second component and the additional joining part with the two outer cover plates of the composite component in the overlapping region by means of resistance welding, and (v) closing at least one current path (14) between the two electrodes by the second component and the additional joining part. The flow direction of a non-metallic layer, preferably a plastic layer of the composite component is influenced during the joining process by mechanical means and/or by minimizing the overlapping length or by positioning the additional joining part close to the free edge of the composite component. The non-metallic layer is arranged between the cover plates. An independent claim is also included for a joined sheet metal structure produced by the above mentioned method, comprising the composite component with at least two metallic cover plates and non-metallic layer, which is arranged between the cover plates, the second composite component, which is joined with the composite component, and the additional joining part.
