The method involves loading a control program (26) into a memory (24) of a control unit (20) to execute the control program during operation of a robot vacuum cleaner (10). The control program stored in the memory is used as a model for connecting a cable (12) between a voltage source (14) and the robot vacuum cleaner. The robot vacuum cleaner is operated to perform various actions by using the control program stored in the memory. Control of a chassis and a cable drum of the robot vacuum cleaner are performed in dependence of the model. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising set of instructions for operating a robot vacuum cleaner (2) a robot vacuum cleaner with a control unit for controlling the operation.
