The method involves arranging and fixing a support element (1) in a protective tube, where thin-walled hollow glass beads are introduced in the protective tube in a region between a contacting region (3) and a sensor area. The hollow glass beads are heated to a temperature above its softening point, and are pressed together to the support element and the protective tube for obtaining a fused glass block. The inner surface of the protective tube or the upper surface of the support element is pretreated to improve the melting properties of the glass beads. An independent claim is included for a sensor for detecting the concentration of a substance in a gas stream.
