The unit has a gas bag (16) connected with a rigid holding element by an attachment element (1) i.e. screw, that is connected or bolted with a locking element (7) i.e. shoulder nut. The attachment element is plastically deformed in an annular deformation portion (4) such that the attachment element and the locking element are positively connected with one another, where an internal diameter of the locking element is greater than an outer diameter of the deformation portion in an undeformed state and smaller than the outer diameter of the deformation portion in a deformed state. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a gas bag unit.
