The starter (1) has a starter relay (15) connected with a starter pinion (13) over a transfer element (17) i.e. fork lever. The pinion is adjusted between addition function- and engaged positions. A pinion shaft (12) is connected with the pinion and rotatably retained in a bearing (14) of a bearing plate (3). The transfer element is connected with the pinion shaft. A freewheel device (7) is firmly arranged in a housing and coupled with a drive shaft (11), which drives the pinion shaft in a rotation direction such that the pinion shaft is axially slidable relative to the drive shaft. An independent claim is also included for a method for assembling a free ejecting starter.
