The device (10) has a measurement data interface (12) for receiving measurement data (20). A control unit (14) controls a load unit (16) such that a current flow (17) via an electrochemical cell array (11) is performed according to a sudden load sequence (22) to cause a change in temperature in the electrochemical cell array and change of surface temperature distribution. The electrochemical cell array is evaluated based on the load sequence and a resulting change of the surface temperature distribution over time duration. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a thermography system (2) a method for checking an electrochemical cell array by thermography (3) a computer program comprising a program code with instructions to execute a method for checking an electrochemical cell array.
