A method for controlling a haptic accelerator pedal in a motor vehicle is proposed. The accelerator pedal can be displaced within an overall displacement range G counter to an opposing force F acting proportionally to a displacement path. With the aid of an actuator, a haptically perceptible signal, for example a virtual pressure point, can be generated within a partial displacement region T by generating an additional opposing force. This signal may indicate, for example, that when a maximum torque value FM corresponding position TM in a hybrid motor vehicle in addition to an electric motor with a fuel-powered engine is switched on. In order to be able to signal a driver in a timely and appropriately haptic perceptible manner that the exceeding of the position TM is imminent, the additional counterforce generated by the actuator is locally reduced shortly before the maximum force value FM within a detent subarea R is reached when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal , which can be perceived by the driver as a click of the accelerator pedal.
