The device (100) has a locking unit (104) provided with a pin (126). A locking unit is provided in a hole (102) for movement between a locking position for retaining an energy absorptance structure in a locked condition, and an unlocking position for holding the energy absorptance structure in an unlocked condition. A throttling device is adapted to cause fluid flow into the hole and/or to slow from the hole so as to influence movement of the locking unit during the movement of the locking unit. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an adaptive energy absorptance structure (2) a method for switching an adaptive energy absorbing structure.
