The tensioner (2) has outer sheath (21) that is formed by cylinder wall of clamping lever (10). Clamping levers (10,13) are mounted on tensioning rollers (5,6). A main unit arranged in annular space helical torsion spring (19) is clamped to produce belt tension between levers. Vibrations of levers are damped by friction device. The friction device is formed as portion or entire portion of friction ring (20) arranged radially between outer sheath and outer surface of torsion spring, so that ring is suppressed against outer sheath. The belt tensioner has a clamp housing (3) which is mounted on a generator housing (1). The clamping levers are rotatably supported on the clamp housing concentrically with an alternator shaft (8).
