Generating a random intrinsic chip ID uses a memory error signature. A 1st and a 2nd ID are generated using test settings, a 1st setting being more restrictive than the 2nd and more errors being generated in the first ID bit string 275 which contains the 2nd ID bit string 290. A memory pause time control, set by a BIST engine 625, controls the number of memory errors, the error numbers 803, 920 fulfilling a predetermined error target. A check confirms whether the 1st ID contains the 2nd ID bit string, the ID being the one used for authentication. Authentication is made possible by a 3rd ID with such an intermediate condition that the 1st ID contains the 3rd ID bit string and the 3rd ID contains the 2nd ID bit string. The intermediate condition contains a guard band to eliminate a bit instability problem near the 1st and 2nd ID limits. The intermediate condition is changed with every ID reading process, which leads to a more reliable identification.
