The method involves measuring a measured variable i.e. degree of contamination such as dirt, of a surface (14) in interior of a motor vehicle (S10) by a measured variable sensor e.g. weight sensor (12). An actual data set (28) of the variable is acquired at a timepoint of a reference data set (22) and another timepoint, where the former timepoint is beginning of usage of the vehicle and the latter timepoint is before or during end of usage of the vehicle. A signal of the sensor is received (S20) by an evaluation device (20), and the actual set is compared (S50) with the reference set. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device (2) a motor vehicle.
