The axial bearing has a circular shaft end or an annular shaft section which seals a bearing pin (4) in a radial manner, particularly by an adjustable or regulated gas seals. The annular shaft section is immersed in a bearing pressure pot (12) and forms a circular or annular pressure bearing chamber (9) between the bearing pin and bearing pressure pot. The height of an oil column of the circular- or annular pressure bearing chamber is higher than the oil gap height of the hydrostatic bearings, so that the height of the oil column and the shaft position are automatically controlled.
