The method involves continuously determining (101) a local traffic density, a speed of a motor car, and a local traffic flow. Assumption is made that the car reaches front of traffic jam, and another local traffic density, another speed of the car, and another local traffic flow are determined (102) when decrease of the speed exceeds a threshold and/or increase of the density exceeds another threshold at a time. A traffic jam front speed indicating a rate of displacement of the traffic jam front in the traffic flow, is determined (103) based on the determined traffic densities and flows. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining forecasting of a front progress of a traffic jam on a section of a traffic route network.
