The method involves detecting available lane width (B). Target speed of a vehicle (2) with a drive past at another vehicle (3) located on a neighboring lane (1.2) is automatically set to a value that is dependant on environment parameter, which is larger than predeterminable difference and running speed of vehicle on the neighboring lane. The difference velocity according to the determined density of traffic on the neighboring lane is variably adjusted in dependence of momentary running speed of farther vehicles driving in a column.
