The device (1) has a light source (7) provided in a housing (5) that includes a light exit opening (6). An optical unit (8) for distributing light of the light source on a surface (2) is arranged in an optical path between the light source and the surface. The optical unit includes a central region (9) and a peripheral region, where the central region is arranged in a main beam direction of the light source. The central region directs the light from the main beam direction at a sides and the peripheral region directs the light of the light source to the main beam direction. An independent claim is also included for an assembly of a surface and a holder.
