The fuel storage system (1) has a main tank (2) and an auxiliary tank (3), where the main tank and the auxiliary tank are connected with an internal combustion engine (9) through a valve device. The internal combustion engine is connected with the main tank through a return line (13). A two by two-way valve (7,8) is provided in a connecting line of the valve device between the respective tanks and the internal combustion engine. Each tank has a level sensor (4,5), where the measured values are supplied to a central evaluation unit (6). The central evaluation unit controls a level indicator and the two by two-way valve. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling the fuel storage system.
