The method involves operating an internal combustion engine including an exhaust gas flow, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow, and an exhaust gas-nitrogen oxide recoupling value. A nitrogen oxide reference value is determined based on an engine rotational speed value and an engine load value. A nitrogen oxide error value is determined in response to the reference value and the recoupling value. A proportional integral (PI) or proportional integral differential (PID) controller (230) is used based on the error value. An EGR portion is controlled in response to a PI or PID output signal.
