The exhaust gas cooler (1) has a flow guiding unit (12) for realizing a first volume flow (11) of an exhaust gas, particularly a combustion engine exhaust gas. A flow chamber (20) is provided for realizing a second volume flow (21) of a cooling medium. A flow guiding unit is partially arranged in the flow chamber and has multiple convex mold elements for the first volume flow. The convex mold element (30) is arranged perpendicular to a plane of a surface on or in the convex mold element. An independent claim is included for a method for providing thermal energy.
