Variable PEM fuel cell system startup time to optimize system efficiency and system performance

A system and method for controlling a fuel cell system start time based on various vehicle parameters. The method includes providing a plurality of input variables that identify the operating conditions of the fuel cell system, and determining a maximum allowable start time for the fuel cell system using a hybridization control strategy and the plurality of input variables. The method then determines a maximum compressor speed and ramp-up rate in order to provide the optimum allowable start time for the fuel cell system while minimizing energy consumption and noise.
