The device has a switching unit (37) which switches a channel opening of an inlet connection (61) to a passage through which flows a gas. A switching control unit (50) controls the switching unit such that gas is added during a first half of an intake stroke of the intake port in a cylinder (11). The switching control unit performs a switching of the switching unit during the intake stroke. The switchover of the switching unit depends on the change speed of the internal combustion engine and a target exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) machine system; and (2) inlet control method.
