The method involves transmitting appropriate signals of a tire of a trailer (9) by sensor systems (2-5, 10-13). A monitoring system (7) carries out a query at the tire based on a potentially registered sensor system. A trailer is coupled to a motor vehicle (1) when start of the motor vehicle is recognized for the monitoring system. A reference is incorporated on the tire of the trailer, and a load state of the tire is determined in the monitoring system. A driver or user of the vehicle is communicated with the monitoring system to specify axles and appropriate size of the trailer.
