The device (1) has an axial displaceable and rotatable switching shaft (2) for selecting and switching gear positions. A sensor system (3) detects the gear positions. The sensor system includes sensor elements (4) e.g. potentiometers, which change an electric resistance by mechanically moving a sensor section (5). The sensor section is mechanically connected and/or coupled with a part of the device. The sensor elements are provided for each movement degree of freedom of the switching shaft. The sensor elements are arranged in an interior of a housing.
