The method involves positioning a slip ring device in a slip ring chamber, and positioning a partially opaque and transparent cooling air protection device (110) in the slip ring chamber. A flow separating unit is provided for separating dirt flows and cooling air streams, so that axially inflowing air stream is deflected radially into the protection device, and the cooling air stream is radially deflected in flow direction further into the protection device. The pollutant flow is redirected radially out of the protection device. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an electric machine with a slip ring device (2) a method for manufacture of an electric machine.
