The device has a direct current (DC) voltage source (2) providing an adjustable voltage to an energy storage device (5). A current sensor (3) measures current flow between the DC voltage source and the energy storage device. A control unit (8) sets the voltage of the DC voltage source, so that a specific current flows from the DC voltage source to the energy storage device. The charge state of the energy storage device is determined based on the set voltage of the DC voltage source. A temperature sensor (4) is provided to measure temperature at the energy storage device. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining charge state of energy storage device.
