The method involves determining beam path (SW) of an electromagnetic wave in atmosphere and selecting reference points (S1-S4) along the beam path. The vertical total electron content (vTEC1-vTEC4) for each reference point along the vertical paths (vW1-Vw4) extending through center of the earth (M) is determined. The incremental electron content is determined based on total electron content to detect propagation errors of the wave along the beam path.
