The gearbox (10,14) has variator (26) which is manipulated to establish several forward speeds between input and output shafts (20,22), and coupled to gear (42A) of transfer gear set (42). A planetary gear set (40) has sun wheel (40A), planet gear carrier (40B) and ring gear (40C) coupled to gear (42A) of transfer gear set (42). A friction brake (52) selectively couples planet gear carrier to gearbox housing (60). A transfer gear set (44) has gear (44A) coupled to sun gear and meshed with gear (44B). A friction clutch (50) selectively engages interconnect gear (42A) with ring gear.
