The switch (10) comprises a housing, a permanent magnet (M), and a magnetoresistive sensor element (SE) for detecting the influence of magnetic field of permanent magnet by a target. An evaluation unit (AE) evaluates the output signal of the sensor element to evaluate the presence of target in the monitoring area and outputs a switching signal. The sensor element has a magnetic angle sensor which provides an output signal that depends on the change in direction of magnetic field caused by the target in the direction of magnetic field. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for operating a magnetoresistive proximity switch; (2) an adapter for magnetoresistive proximity switch; and (3) an assembly for sensing piston position of metering piston in lubricant distributor.
