Integrated environmental barrier to protect the receiver portion of a monitoring system for the health of a fuel cell stack. The system for monitoring the stack functionality comprises a transmitting measuring module and an optical communication module which has a receiver. Measurements that indicate the functionality of the fuel cell stack are optically communicated between the transmitter and the receiver through the barrier protecting the environment. The barrier protecting the environment is arranged between the measurement module and the optical communication module, so that the environment barrier isolates the optical communication module from the environment contained in the fuel cell stack. The environmental barrier includes light blocking and light transmissive sections that allow system variation while ensuring signal integrity.
