The method involves determining value of a gradient delay volume in a liquid chromatography plant. The value is adjusted in a region of a volume of a volume adjusting device (5), when the value of the liquid chromatography plant departs. The value is adjusted or altered during and/or after a sample injection. Flow rate and/or pressure within the region of the liquid chromatography plant are maintained constant during alteration of the value by controlling opposite directions of a pump by a control device (60).
