The method involves measuring instantaneous pressure reigning in a combustion chamber (6) of an internal combustion engine (2). Derivative of instantaneous pressure is determined, and information related to speed (N) and a load (C) of the engine is determined. Speed of piston (3) is determined from a cartography (12) that establishes relation among the information related to the speed and the load of the engine, the pressure derivative and the speed of piston, where the cartography is obtained from pre-test activities. An independent claim is also included for a vehicle.
