The method involves obtaining a set of measurements of acceleration of a pump (2) by a controller (3), and comparing the obtained measuring acceleration with a reference acceleration model, where the controller is adapted for controlling an injection system to inject an additive into a fuel tank or in an exhaust gas line to the atmosphere. The controller is arranged to detect drifts characteristic of the faulty operations of the injection system from the comparison of the obtained measuring acceleration with the reference acceleration model.
