The method involves injecting fuel into a cylinder of a thermal engine by a fuel injector (E1), and combusting the fuel injected into the cylinder (E2). Torque generated according to the combustion of the fuel in the cylinder is determined (E3), and state of malfunction of the fuel injector representative of poor fuel injection quantity is determined (E4) according to the generated torque, where the generated torque is determined by the measurement of pressure in the cylinder, or by the measurement by a torque meter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer-readable data recording medium storing a program for diagnosing a fuel injector of a cylinder of a thermal engine (2) a computer program for diagnosing a fuel injector of a cylinder of a thermal engine.
