The method involves operating a 4-stroke internal combustion engine with fuel that contains 100% ethanol. Multiple injections per engine cycle and per cylinder of the engine are performed (2-5) to obtain a high-carbon mixture. A fuel injection sequence is utilized to avoid simultaneous injection of the fuel into two separate cylinders. The engine is rotated in a starting phase at higher rotation speed about 300 turns per minutes, preferably 400 turns per minutes. A valve is closed at an air inlet of the engine until the engine is started.
