The method involves allowing a driver to press a brake, where speed of a car is lower than a threshold speed (2). The driver is allowed to release a footbrake pedal during restarting of an internal combustion engine of the car. An assistance system or hill assist system is provided for providing assistance to hill start. The assistance system is programmed to apply brake based on conditions such as the engine is turned off, driving mode is higher than a threshold driving mode, driver has released the brake pedal, and vehicle speed is lower than another threshold speed. An independent claim is also included for a car.
